illogical harmonies
Johnny Chang: violin
Mike Majkowski: double bass

Composed and recorded in Berlin by illogical harmonies Spring - Winter 2017
Artwork and design by Cathy Fishman

illogical harmonies is the duo project of Berlin residents Johnny Chang (violin) and Mike Majkowski (double bass), both of whom are composers as well as musicians. Their performance activity ranges widely, from improvisation to composed music. In November 2010, Johnny Chang and Koen Nutters started Konzert Minimal, an ensemble focusing on Wandelweiser-related music. Mike Majkowski later joined Konzert Minimal as well, leading to the formation of illogical harmonies in 2014. The duo's debut album, Volume, was released on Another Timbre in 2016.

This recording consists of three pieces 10 to 20 minutes in duration (recorded in 2017), woven from sustained tones produced by the calm, unhurried bowing of the violin and contrabass. Accompanying the sustained tones are subtle sonic oscillations caused by the bowing, as well as occasional deft changes of pitch. The seemingly simple music is filled with a captivating beauty.
